Frequently Asked Questions

DVR Systems

Q. How long will the system record for?

A. Minimum of 14 hours with a 40 GB removable hard drive.

Q. What lighting conditions will the cameras work under?

A. If there is any visible street lighting the cameras will obtain a usable picture, white light is always best but cameras perform well even with low pressure sodium 'yellow' street lamps.

Q Are the cameras infra-red sensitive?

A. Yes, most of the screen mounted & PTZ options have a manually selected IR cut filter to switch the camera into monochrome 'night time' mode, This makes the cameras sensitive to the light in the infra red spectrum as well as visible light. An additional infra-red illuminator would be required to see in areas where there is no visible light.

Q. How many pictures per second are recorded?

A. 25 pictures per second for a single camera system.12 pps for 2 cameras.

Q. How powerful is the zoom lens?

A. 18 times optical zoom + 12x digital for the cameras with removable IR cut filters. Field of view is 480 at full wide angle and 2.80 at full optical telephoto. A number plate can be read at approx 75 metres range. The non IR cameras as used in PatrolVu 300 are similar except that they have 4 x digital zoom.

Q. Can I record while the vehicle is moving?

A. Yes, the PatrolVu's ruggedised design allows recording while the vehicle is in motion.

Q. Is the system approved for use in emergency services vehicles.

A. Yes, all our PatrolVu systems are 'e' marked to 95/54/EC and certified to AES Specification 5.

Q. Does the TSS DVR incorporate watermarking?

A. Yes, we are compliant with all aspects of the UK Home Office Scientific Development Branch digital imaging procedure. Refer to the link pages for further details and download. TSS also employs MD5 watermarking with 128 bit message digest (key). There is the option to generate a certificate at the same time as the file is copied to CD or DVD. There is also a sequential field counter burnt into every image.

Q. What are the implications of using the system in the UK with regards to Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act?

A. You are not allowed to carry out pre-planned targeted surveillance of a particular individual without prior permission in compliance with RIPA. Any evidence gathered in this way would possibly be not admissible in court. If you are carrying out general surveillance and happen to see an incident & capture an individual committing an offence there should be no problem with using this as admissible evidence. We would recommend seeking the advice of your local Police Authority regarding RIPA and ensuring all operators are adequately trained.

Q. Will the cameras work with ANPR systems?

A. Yes, we can provide an ANPR lead to connect to a MDT or laptop running ANPR software from most major manufacturers.

Q. Will I need a secondary battery?

A. For a single screen camera system no, but for systems involving PTZ cameras & masts a split charging system & battery would be recommended.

Q. Is there a restriction on how many PCs I can load the playback software onto?

A. No, but you will need to buy a USB separate caddy for each playback PC.

Q. What specification of PC do I need for playback?

Operating System: Windows 2000 or later

Q The Back Office Software will not run on my PC

A Check software has been installed correctly. Check you have the correct operating system. Follow the instructions for installation and reinstall if necessary.

Q System will not power up

A Check power supply has a constant 12 Volts and that the fuse has not blown.
Run the engine in case the vehicle's battery has become discharged.

Q. System has no picture

A Check that the system has power, all cables are connected properly and that the disk drive is locked securely in place. If it has, try playing back a recording. If you cannot see a picture on the monitor try changing which video channel the monitor is set to. If you still cannot see a picture the fault is probably with the monitor cable or the monitor, but possibly the DVR. If you can see a picture on replay but not live viewing the problem is likely to be with the camera, camera cable or DVR. You can eliminate the camera cable by connecting the camera directly to the back of the DVR. Contact TSS Service Department for further assistance.
